Waukee Community Closet – a chance to serve/a chance to save

Did you know that clothing is one of the top three sources of clutter found in homes in the US? Join us in assisting the Waukee Community Closet as they prepare to expand their reach to meet the growing needs of students and their families in the Waukee community. Beginning in July, Straighten Your Paths will offer a 20% discount on all closet, bedroom, and laundry organizing through the month of September. We will also transport all clothing donations to the Waukee Community Closet. Below is their story:Clothing Closet, community closet

The Waukee Community Closet is a community run, non-profit business that accepts clothing donations in order to provide clothing free of charge to those in need. The clothing closet started as a localized effort inside Prarieview School and is currently looking for a location to which it can expand, preferably in the city of Waukee, and close to a majority of schools. Ingrid Williams and Kristin Rinderknecht both have students at Waukee High School and are pooling their efforts to bring life to this program after seeing the need in the schools. Ingrid worked as a health associate for many years and continually had parents asking for clothing for their children. Needs were not being met and the vision was born for the Waukee Community Closet.

Many requests are made for warm, winter clothing and shoes; but it goes beyond the physical need to needs of dignity and confidence for students. For example, last year a counselor reported a male student wearing girls shoes because he did not have anything else to wear. This not only affects self-esteem but scholastic performance as students feel the weight of their situation. The overwhelming need is great in a community that, at first glance, appears to be a wealthy Des Moines suburb, and this non-profit organization is rising to meet the call.

With the help of the community and students of Waukee schools, the Waukee Community Closet will be accepting donations starting in August 2016. All clothing will be laundered, and only clothing in like new condition will be accepted. All clothing is provided free of charge to those in need and done so with the proper degree of privacy, dignity, and respect as needs are identified by school counselors and local religious organizations.

The Waukee Community Closet does have a Facebook page. For more information you may also send questions to waukeecommunitycloset@gmail.com. Monetary donations are being accepted in check form only at this time but will soon be accepted online. Donations may be mailed to:
