Many people are allergic to ‘getting organized’ because they’ve experienced a consistent lack of success with using to-do lists,” writes David Allen, management consultant, executive coach, and author of Ready for Anything: 52 Productivity Principles for Work & Life. It’s true. What’s the point of creating the to-do list if it only fosters stress and the feeling of failure? So, this week, we will focus on our GO month resolution of planning efficiently.

One of my number one tips for having a productive, organized day is to create a to-do list. Every Sunday evening, sit down and make a list. Write down everything that is on your mind for the coming week; this eliminates the chaos in your mind (or at least it helps!). Cindy Torvik, Manager and Chief Organizer, advises you to organize your weekly list in this manner:

–          Must be done

–          Can be done

–          Gets to be done

A list like this will help you both plan efficiently and manage your time properly. The “must be dones” are written in first. Then you fill in the “can be dones” when you have extra time. Finally, the “gets to be dones” are what I refer to as the fun stuff… the items on your list that you want to get done, but don’t always have time for. Reading. Scrapbooking. Pinterest.

I also like to add in a few subcategories on my own to-do list:

–          Chores

–          Errands

–          Kids

–          Work

These four categories practically eliminate my chaos on those busy mommy days. My house is clean, groceries are bought, kids are happy, and emails are sent… in a perfect world. I know that a to-do list won’t solve all of your problems, and it won’t get completed without some work, but it does have some major benefits!

A to-do list is a start to a new, more organized way of living. My advice is to do what works for you. There is no right way. Maybe you like your list on a calendar, or a plain notebook, or even on your iPad. Whatever it is, get it down in a manner that helps your days become less chaotic. Have a plan. Don’t live life in reaction mode. Use a to-do list, so you will be prepared when something unexpected arises. Work on your to-do list one day at a time.

Beginning a to-do list isn’t always easy, but it does make life easier once you find the right method for you. God is with you. He doesn’t want us to live these chaotic, unorganized lives. Find the calm. And find the courage to keep trying!
