CINDY TORVIK – GENERAL MANAGER OF SYP
“A place for everything and everything in its place” is Cindy’s organizing motto. A life-long organizer, Cindy excels at containing and controlling chaos and has been a key member of the SYP team since 2007. As the wife of a husband who travels, a mother of three busy children, a breast cancer survivor, a fitness instructor, and an active member in her church, Cindy fully understands the importance of prioritizing and planning to keep disorder and chaos under control. Cindy holds a BA, MBA from UNI and is a loyal Panther fan. As a committed fitness enthusiast, you may see her in the local Warrior Dash, Color Run, or instructing a spinning class at the YMCA. In 2012, Cindy reached the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro with the Above & Beyond Cancer expedition. In her spare time she enjoys scrapbooking and reading. How does she find time for it all? Cindy claims it comes down to planning, following through with those plans, being prepared with backup plans, and maintaining a joyful attitude throughout.
CARYN KELLY – GENERAL MANAGER of SHINE
Curious to learn more about other cultures, Caryn Kelly began volunteering with a community-based ESL program for immigrants and refugees in Minneapolis back in 2001. Inspired by this experience, Caryn pursued a career in teaching English, and for over 15 years, taught, trained volunteers, and advised diverse adult learners on their educational and career training opportunities.
Through her work, Caryn met many hard-working students full of potential, but who were often unable to find work that could support their families. Many felt frustrated by their inability to fulfill their ambition for a better life for themselves and their children in their new country. Understanding their drive, and eager to make a difference, Caryn connected with Patty Robertson and Shine Housekeeping. The two shared the goal of offering fair and positive employment opportunities for refugees forced to leave their home countries, and a partnership grew.
Caryn’s experience traveling on five continents and living for many years on the US/Mexico border have taught her that the less one has, the lighter life becomes. Her work both in the US and abroad with refugees and immigrants have truly taught her to “live simply, so that others may simply live,” and she is humbled and honored to share this message through SYP and Shine.
PATTY ROBERTSON – FOUNDER
Growing up on a large cattle ranch on the state line of the western Dakotas introduced Patty to the responsibilities of careful planning, creative and resourceful problem solving, and the importance of teamwork at a young age. She founded Straighten Your Paths in 2003 following 16 years in the corporate arena where she continued to hone her instinctive organizational skills managing day-to-day operations including revenue and expense flow for multi-million dollar companies. She has recruited and managed teams of 4 to 40 people while planning and implementing systems to help her teams reach their goals.
In 2010, she received the designation of Certified Professional Organizer® (CPO®) from the Board of Certification for Professional Organizers. This certification recognizes those professionals who have met specific minimum qualifications and proven through examination and client interaction to possess the body of knowledge and experience required for certification.
Commissioned as a Stephen Minister in 1997, she has since walked alongside many care-receivers providing care to those experiencing life transitions. “Often traveling through life, people with needs suffer silently or don’t find the level of care they need,” says Robertson, “This can eventually lead to disorganization and an overwhelming feeling of not knowing which direction to turn next.” Her passion for helping fellow travelers journey through life inspired the rise of Straighten Your Paths.
One of her greatest joys is giving back to others through various mission work in which she is involved. In her spare time, she enjoys family time, reading, gardening, golfing, biking and hiking.
